GRAHAME KING: Record Barbel
THE current British record is the 21lb 1oz Great Ouse giant caught by Grahame King in 2006.
He took it on a small chunk of heavily-flavoured luncheon meat on a light leger rig – Grahame had landed the same fish (from the Adam’s Mill stretch twice in the year before at slightly lesser weights.
The Ouse’s stranglehold over the record list has lasted 15 years, and the river accounts for 27 of the 50 heaviest barbel ever caught. However, these are made up by just a handful of individual fish living in a relatively short stretch of water.
