NEILL STEPHEN: Record Chub 2012

Angling Times (UK) - - 50 GREATEST CATCHES -

SPECIMEN ace and former Drennan Cup winner Neill Stephen certainly went the extra yard to catch his British record-equalling chub of 9lb 5oz from the River Lea in 2012. And, as with many of the best big-fish catches down the years, the simplest rig proved successful – he used nothing more complicated than a freelined lump of cheese paste.

Said Neill: “The river runs through an area popular with dog walkers, and the fish seem to know exactly when the quietest times are. I would arrive at the river well before first light and, creeping along the banks, was able to hear the chub splashing and surfacing in certain areas as they fed. This ultimately helped me choose the best spots to fish.”
