MARK’S TOP TIPS
Top up with a small nugget of groundbait after every fish. This will keep the scent in the water and make sure the shoal doesn’t drift off while you are playing a fish.
Use a bulk of No8s to shot your float. This should be set just above your hooklength and will get the hookbait to the deck quickly and make sure it remains anchored in place.
Strike sideways when you get a bite. This will prevent a fish being brought to the surface momentarily and thrashing about before it even knows it is hooked.
This tactic isn’t just about carp, and is equally effective when big bags of F1s, tench and barbel are the target.
Alternate how you hook each maggot. Hook one through the head and the next through the tail, and continue this process. Doing this makes sure more of the hook point is showing and leads to fewer missed bites.
