IHAVE to applaud the owners of Fryerning Fisheries, in Essex, for the latest addition to their complex. No, it’s not a new lake or another 50lb mirror – it’s an 8ft tall, 3.5 ton block of granite statue carved into the shape of a ‘Carp God’!
The lucky charm was definitely smiling down on the guy who carved it too (pages 4&5) as after he had installed it in a prime position overlooking the lake he had a quick session and landed two carp for 88lb, including one over 50lb!
As the owner Chris Knowles says, fishing should be fun and if the Easter Island-style head makes anglers smile then it’s money well spent.
Maybe some other waters will follow suit? I’d vote for a giant ‘match god’ statue of Bob Nudd (complete with white cap) at the scene of his World Champs win at Holme Pierrepont or what about a huge Dick Walker statue on the famous dam wall at Redmire?
Talking of the legend that is Bob Nudd, it’s great to have him back in Angling Times this week and I read with interest his bait tips feature (pages 28&29) as I know they’ll help me catch a few more fish at the back end of the season. The fish have seen a lot of bait through the summer months and even the smallest tweak can make big differences to your catches – give them a try and bag up this weekend!
