POSSIBLY the country’s biggest barbel has been banked at a colossal weight of 19lb 4oz.

The specimen was taken by Cambridgeshire angler Gary Johnson from a private stretch of the River Nene, and is believed to be the same fish he landed at the start of the season at a lighter weight of 18lb.

The news comes just weeks after Nigel Bryans smashed the Nene record of 18lb 3oz from a similar stretch – but Gary’s recent addition is now awaiting confirmation to take the number one slot in the record books.
