Keep crucians for fishing’s next generation

Angling Times (UK) - - YOUR FISHING WEEK -

ONE of my earliest memories of fishing was on a small pond close to my house where all of the locals used to catch crucians.

The same water was also home to thousands of tiny perch, and unskilled angler that I was I could only ever catch these little pests.

The crucians averaged around 1lb but they were pristine examples of the species and I was so excited when I first fluked one. To this day it still sits up there as one of my most memorable angling achievements.

Nowadays the same pond is still there but it is a shadow of its former self. It is now full of mirrors and commons, and the crucians are long gone.

I hope the ongoing campaigns to promote this beautiful species help show the new generation of fishery owners and anglers that crucians are worth considering. Steven Langley, Wiltshire
