Catmeat was very pop­u­lar sev­eral years ago, but it seems to have been for­got­ten about by many an­glers now. Where al­lowed, it’s still a very ef­fec­tive soft meat hook­bait. Use the ver­sion in gravy rather than jelly. Here’s my trick for hook­ing it...

1 Thread a fine bait­ing tool through a chunk of meat and pull your hook care­fully back through the bait.

2 Re­lease the hook and let the hook set­tle in the side of the meat cube like this.
