Too many big-money matches these days?

THE match fishing fraternity will no doubt be getting excited at the thought of another bigmoney tournament following the announcement of the Golden Reel event, but surely the match fishing calendar is now at breaking point?

Not a week goes by when a bigmoney competition isn’t being run. There’s Fish O’Mania, Maver Match This and RiverFest, to name but three, and now we have another event to rival them.

Although this may be good for those who enjoy competing at the top level, it will no doubt drive down open match attendances even further as people go chasing the big-money prizes.

Match angling for fat brown envelopes is good for the sport, but I think the Golden Reel needs to be the last addition to the calendar. Aaron Burnham, email
