What did seem to work on the day was chopping and changing my hookbaits.
I fished wafters for much of the match, and although my first carp fell to the trusted orange, after that I had fish on yellow, pink and pellet-coloured baits. It was actually quite bizarre. Every time I changed the colour I had a pull, yet rarely did I have two bites in succession on the same colour. Maybe I should have changed colour every cast to keep the fish guessing!
Hookbait choice can make a massive difference and even if you aren’t getting bites, as I wasn’t, it can be well worth mixing things up just to see what happens.
I tried three shades of dyed hookbait.
