Bemused by those ‘fly boys’

Angling Times (UK) - - THIS WEEK -

I’M always intrigued by anglers wanting to catch big fish on fly gear, but I am convinced that this should always be in no more than than 20m-25m of water. Any more than that, and having to tire fish – or bore them into surrender – holds no attraction to me.

Where do I stand on fly anglers catching blue and porbeagle sharks, which are hard to bring to the surface if they dive? As long as the welfare of the fish isn’t compromised and the angler has the required skills and suitable tackle, fine – it’s just not for me.

Fighting a 300lb shark in deeper water on a 50lb stand-up outfit requires more strength than on fly gear and is more exciting as far as I’m concerned.
