How true ‘skimmers’ got their nickname

Angling Times (UK) - - YOUR FISHING WEEK -

FOR the past 20 years or so I have bitten my lip and kept silent when I read of bream between 1lb and 2lb being called ‘skimmers’.

In my younger days, fishing the Fen drains, a skimmer bream was deemed to be a fish of about 12oz to 1lb.

The word ‘skimmer’ came about because you would floatfish the drains, skim small bream over the water and catch them in your hand.

Try doing this with a fish of 1lb-2lb on light tackle and you will lose more than you land. Keith Arthur may well agree with me. Derek Hammond, Spalding, Lincs
