Expert advice to help you bag up on Britain’s favourite fish

Martin Bowler’s tips for big redfins Top 10 hookbaits & easy rigs to tie Hot fisheries to head for now

EXPERTS are predicting that this autumn could be one of the best in living memory for silverfish, especially roach. I’m not sure what it’s like in your area at the moment, but the rivers around the Angling Times offices are simply alive with them!

I went out drop shotting for perch the other evening and couldn’t believe the number of silverfish showing. I knew what I had to do…

Using the drop shot weight as a bomb, I tied a long hooklength with a small hook and grabbed a loaf of bread from the nearby newsagents. Minutes later I was catching roach and skimmers on the 8ft rod. Unorthodox it may have been, but it was like being a kid again!

Two evenings later I returned with a proper float rod, stick floats from Dave Harrell’s new range, and a pint of casters. It took seconds to get a bite, and within an hour I’d ticked off roach, perch, skimmers, chub, gudgeon and bleak. In my opinion there’s nothing better than floatfishing on rivers, especially when you don’t know what that next bite will bring. Pick your time, the right water, and try some of the great tricks and tips from our unrivalled team of experts in this week’s issue – I guarantee you’ll catch more. A huge thanks to rod licence artist David Miller for the amazing artwork on this week’s cover too – see more at www.davidmiller
