Tommy Pickering’s Tip of the Week.

BEING able to cast a long way is a useful skill to have.

You need to be able to present a rig where the fish are, and sometimes this is a long way out from the bank. With cooler weather on the way fish will start to move further out.

A 60-70 yard cast is a long way on standard match gear and once you start going here and beyond it’s time for fairly specialised tackle and techniques.

Don’t over-gun it, however, because if your rods are too stiff you are likely to suffer a lot of hook pulls.
