THIS one ticks a lot of boxes for us. It’s a beautiful fish, it weighs a stonking 47lb 12oz and it was caught using real ingenuity.

Dan Taylor, who has banked a number of huge fish in the last year, caught this 4ft-long beast, which hadn’t been out all year, just a foot from the bank in a swim that rarely gets fished.

The peg contains what Dan called a “savage gravel ledge” that hinders line lay, but by using a storm pole to drape his mainline over, he was able to hook the fish then land it after an epic boat battle.

“It took a bit of thought and process to catch it, which made it all the more rewarding,” said the 28-year-old. THERE’S a certain pressure that comes with naming a fish the Wood Carving, but we don’t think anyone can disagree about the beauty of this one.

What astounds us is the fact this fish, caught by Adam Matthews at Kevin Nash’s Copse Lake, weighs 58lb 2oz yet carries that bulk so well. It completely filled a 120cm-long carp cradle and proves big can be beautiful.
