OCTOBER can be one of the best months of the year for carp angling, and one of the best baits can be maggots.

The heat of the summer has died off and silverfish will be less active, allowing you the chance to fish grubs with minimal interference from smaller species.

“A SOLID PVA BAG OF MAGGOTS CAN BE DEADLY ON BOILIE-DOMINATED LAKES”

A solid PVA bag of maggots, with real or fake ones on the hook, can be deadly on pressured day-ticket waters like Linear Fisheries or other boilie-dominated lakes.

Maggots can be threaded on the hook. Buoyant fake ones and/or a ‘mag aligner’ sleeve over the eye aids presentation and hooking. A supple braid is the ideal hooklink for any solid PVA bag rig as it can be coiled into the parcel of bait with ease. Keep it short, too – 4ins is plenty. An inline flat pear lead is ideal for this sort of rig. Make sure the PVA bag is tightly packed with maggots and other morsels.
