Angling Times (UK) - - UNDERWATER SPECIAL -

ONCE upon a time, anglers were content with a quick catch shot on the bank.

Nowadays, more and more of us want additional footage of our catch swimming away after being returned, or even taking the hookbait in the first place, to share on social-media sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

Advancements in technology also now mean that anglers no longer have to rely on reading the transmissions felt through a lead and braided mainline to work out what they are fishing over – they can actually stream the lakebed live on their phone screen!

For many, this has opened up the underwater world like never before.

This month we take a look at five of the best underwater cameras currently on the market….

The HERO4 Silver is the second most advanced action camera in the extensive GoPro range.

It features a built-in touch display and can shoot in full HD.

It is able to operate at an incredible 40m depth and, with an ISO range of 100-6400, ultra low-light shooting is possible.

The HERO4 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for controlling remotely via a smartphone or tablet or using a separate smart remote. Using the supplied adhesive mounts, the camera can be attached to your rod or landing net handle for some unique camera angles.

WATER WOLF HD CAMERA Price: £139.99

This camera has been developed especially for fishing. As well as being waterproof to 100m it is also shockproof.

Fully charged, it has four hours of recording in an HD-ready 720p widescreen format at 30 frames per second for optimum light sensitivity.

The camera comes with a stainless-steel stick that gives it perfect stability when moving through the water. Three add-on weights give different sink rates and filming angles.

The camera is provided with an add-on float and an EVA carry strap and bag. www.water

LIFEPROOF NUUD Price: £79.99

If you don’t want to spend loads on an underwater camera you can transform your iPhone into one with this Lifeproof Nuud waterproof case.

The case forms a tight seal around your touchscreen to keep out water and dirt.

The Nuud is available for iPhone 5 and later models but there are other versions available for different phones.

It can’t be used for such long periods as an out-and-out underwater camera, but it is submersible to 6.6ft for one hour – perfect for capturing some quick underwater footage.

Shimano entered the action camera market with this CM-1000 Sport Camera. The compact, waterproof body will work at depths down to 10m.

It is also seriously lightweight at just 86g, including battery and memory card. Being Wi-Fi equipped, it can be paired with a smart phone for uploading to any social-media site.

The camera can be linked so that you can change camera settings remotely and frame your shot via your mobile device.

It gives a two-hour battery life from a four-hour charging time. www.shimanosportcam

FishSpy is an aerodynamic marker float that can transmit live video to your phone or tablet from depths of 10m.

The camera records and transmits live footage at ranges up to 100m enabling you to find features, check the presentation of your bait and watch how the fish react to your rig.

It generates its own Wi-Fi signal and the low-light camera can record and transmit clear pictures even in murky or coloured water.

It is supplied with an orange fin marker with optional yellow or black fins available.
