TIP 8 –

PICK THE RIGHT HOOK

Angling Times (UK) - - TIPS & TACTICS -

FOR maggots and worm sections there is only one hook for me, and interestingly it’s a red pattern. I use the Drennan Red Maggot on a natural venue (a micro-barbed pattern) or a Drennan Carp Maggot, which is barbless, to comply with commercial fishery rules.

The size 18 is perfect for maggot or worm at this time of year as it’s a big size 18. Going into winter I’d start to consider dropping down to a size 20.

Don’t use too fine a line on commercial fisheries as you need to give yourself a fighting chance of getting in any carp or big perch you hook – a 0.10mm or even a 0.12mm hooklength is about right.

Red hooks are great for use with maggots or worm sections.
