Polly, angling’s ‘Little Big Man’
IT’S an oft-repeated comment that Mark Pollard is ‘the best angler never to fish for England’, and that could well be true.
So, why hasn’t this brilliant ‘little’ man made the team? I added inverted commas because some commentators seem to think it’s a size-related thing, size equating to the strength and power required to fish the techniques often demanded at World Championships. Rubbish!
Look at Polly’s results in Ireland. Few places challenge strength and technique more severely, and results there have often brought anglers into the eye of the selectors. Bob Nudd is probably the classic example.
So, why is Polly capless? Well, to pick someone for England, someone else has to be left out. Mark would now be in the fairly senior category for international angling and who, over the past 20 years when Polly was at his peak, would you leave out of the team to make way?
Now, with brilliant anglers of the next generation ready to give us podium continuity for the next 20-30 years, it has to be said that Polly’s chance has gone.
It won’t be long before he’s available for the Veterans though. I’d love to see him picked.
Polly in Irish bagging mode. He’s a true great.
