CARP will now back away from the bank due to the disturbance of anglers setting up and nets going in before a match, especially with the colour dropping out of the water.

It makes sense to target fish in that slightly deeper water where they feel safe. When I say ‘long’ I’m talking 14.5m as a starting point if possible. I don’t start at the 16m limit of a top-end pole, especially if there is a 16m limit in place, as it gives me nowhere to go should the carp back off.

Quite often I’ll feed and fish at 14.5m but later on catch a bonus carp or two at 16m, even though I haven’t fed there. If I start at 16m, doing this becomes impossible. Always give yourself the option of adding a section, even if your pole is 13m or 14.5m long.
