8 STILL­WA­TER roach are al­most like a dif­fer­ent species com­pared to those in run­ning wa­ter. While river roach have quite a wide taste in baits, for still­wa­ter spec­i­mens I take only white mag­gots. A Ka­masan Black Cap feeder and he­li­copter rig baited with three grubs is as com­plex as it gets.

If the wa­ter is deep, or I just want the feeder to empty slowly, I will pack the mag­gots tightly into the feeder. I also rid­dle off any bran or maize and feed just mag­gots as the pale coloured meal can spook the fish. Try pep­ping your mag­gots up with a tea­spoon­ful of pineap­ple flavour­ing per pint of neat bait.
