Slow going at Shiplate Farm

-

WHEN former Fish O’ winner Steve Jackson invited me on to the lovely Somerset fishery Shiplate Farm to support his match in aid of the Clic Sargent charity I couldn’t say no!

I drew a flyer with the end of an island about 20m in front, open water to the left and a good deep margin to the right. The peg had produced the top silver fish weight on their weekly Thursday match. What could go wrong?

Well, almost everything! Two very cool nights in succession and clear skies generating a fierce algae bloom changed things, and I didn’t have a bite until the sun hit my peg, over two hours in.

To cut a long, very sad story short, I had three hand-sized skimmers until the last five minutes, then an 11lb 4oz carp from the margin.

The charity benefited by just under £1,500 and most pegs fished far better than mine!
