WE ALL love surprises, and fishing has an amazing knack of throwing them up at this time of year.
I’m not talking about catching a partly thawed chicken inside a supermarket carrier bag while feeder fishing for bream on the river (I’ll tell you about that another time), but landing surprise fish from waters where you wouldn’t expect them to be.
This week it seems that roach and perch have really switched on to anglers’ baits on the carp waters, with some huge catches and specimen fish hitting the banks.
Those anglers who are prepared think a bit differently with their approach and experiment on the bank can really reap the rewards right now.
If we’ve had a cold night and you’re fishing the following day I’d definitely recommend taking a few prawns with you to a commercial, because they’re a magnet for big perch.
You could even ask your local stillwater fishery owner if they’ll let you have a rove around with a light lure or drop shot gear – I’m sure they’d be amazed to see some of the huge stripeys that live among their stocks of F1s and matchy carp. Talking of surprises, how about an all-carbon seat box to sit on next season? We’ve just seen an amazing creation from the lads at Preston Innovations, just one product in a long line of exciting new tackle for 2018, and I reckon it’s simply stunning.
