Ex­cit­ing Tar­bert Book Fes­ti­val ahead

A SCHOOL visit by a top chil­dren’s writer will raise the cur­tain on a fan­tas­tic Tar­bert Book Fes­ti­val later this month.

The fifth edi­tion of this pop­u­lar fes­ti­val opens on Friday Oc­to­ber 27 the with a visit from Theresa Bres­lin to Tar­bert Academy. Lo­cal writer Ken MacTag­gart will also give a pre­sen­ta­tion to the pupils about his new book, The Haynes Astro­naut Man­ual.

On Satur­day, writer and pre­sen­ter Paul Mur­ton will talk about his re­cent BBC Grand Tours series The Is­lands. Con­tin­u­ing the is­land theme, ge­ol­o­gist Alan McKirdy will talk about his book Ar­gyll and the Is­lands, a fas­ci­nat­ing in­sight into the rocks be­neath us.

Is­lands in­cluded are Is­lay, Jura and Colon­say. The af­ter­noon con­cludes with an ap­pear­ance by the Ge­og­ra­pher Royal of Scot­land, Char­lie With­ers, whose book

Map­ping the Is­lands is a beau­ti­ful vol­ume in which the his­tory of Scot­tish map-mak­ing is ex­plored. These ses­sions will take place in TALC, Tar­bert. Cel­e­brated

Satur­day evening sees the wel­come re­turn of cel­e­brated nov­el­ist Chris Brook­myre, who will ap­pear for the Spring­bank Ses­sions at the Stone­field Cas­tle Ho­tel.

On Sun­day, the guest ap­pear­ances at the ‘Crime and Nour­ish­ment’ event in­clude Charles McGarry, who will in­tro­duce his

new novel The Ghost of He­len

Ad­di­son, the first in the Leo Mo­ran series of de­tec­tive fic­tion, and, Lisa Tut­tle, who will talk about her lat­est novel The Strange Af­fair

of Jes­per­son and Lane. The venue for this event is The Isth­mus.

For the sec­ond year, a writ­ers’ work­shop will be led by writ­ing com­pe­ti­tion judge, Anne Hamilton. This year’s win­ner is due to be an­nounced as the fes­ti­val be­gins.
