Home: California, USA About: Known as ‘the ultramarathon man’, Karnazes was a pioneer of ultra marathon running by way of bringing it to the attention of the broader public. In the United States he ran a marathon a day for 50 days in 50 different states, which brought him wider acclaim. He’s the author of several ultra-running books including the recently published ‘The road to Sparta’.
He says: I start to increase the length of my daily runs, but as you’ll often hear runners talk about time on their feet, I spend all day on my feet. Literally, I don’t sit down during the day. I have a stand up desk and use it all the time. My biggest ambition is to run in every country in the world in a one-year time frame, something I’m in the stages of planning right now.
My favourite kit: The North Face – Flight Series Fuse Jacket (£85.00; thenorthface. co.uk)
Why: It’s weatherproof and breathable, but most importantly so light. I can pack it into a pocket, so it’s ultra convenient when I’m unsure of the weather. Our verdict: We also found the jacket to be incredibly light and great at packing down into its own pocket. The incorporated hood is useful and adds further protection to the water and wind resistant fabric. Breathability is good and the engineered areas of ventilation are a real benefit. The bonded seams help keep out the worst of the weather, ensuring protection from the unexpected downpour.
