Rooney toys with 800m move

MARTYN ROONEY admits the pursuit of ‘new goals’ means he is going to explore the idea of moving up to 800m, writes Euan Crumley.

The European 400m champion and the man who anchored Britain to 4x400m bronze at last month’s IAAF World Championships has been left disappointed by his performances in 2017 and is looking to find a motivational spark by changing things up.

“I have to find some new goals and find something that is going to excite me,” said the 30-year-old, whose last race over 800m was a 1:53.52 in Florida in 2014. “Seb Coe says I need to go and run an 800m so we’ll see what the winter brings.

“A change is as good as a rest and there are some great 800m coaches in Loughborough so it would be great to jump into a couple of sessions and see how it goes.”

Rooney, who came sixth in his heat in the individual 400m at London 2017 added: “It’s not been a great year, in fact it’s been an awful year. But it’s been a year when I asked for two things – a healthy baby (his daughter Ciada was born last month) and a world medal.

“I got both. I got the things I wanted so I can’t be greedy. I’d like to have run – and probably should have run – 45 low but it just didn’t happen (his best this year was 45.65 in Madrid). It’s my 11th year on the circuit and sometimes you are going to have a bad year.”

As for next year, Rooney would love to take part in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April, so much so that he insists he would pay his own way out to Australia.

“The Commonwealth Games is completely out of my control,” he added. “I haven’t hit the standard and they don’t know if they are going to take a relay team because of cost. I’ve said I’ll pay for my flights, I don’t mind doing it, but it’s up to the selectors and whether they want to take a team or not.

“My senior individual debut was in Melbourne so it would be nice to go back and have another go. With a good winter behind me, you never know what could happen.”
