EATING DISORDERS

Athletics Weekly - - Letters -

MADDY AUSTIN’s article about her battle with anorexia in last week’s AW was interesting and contains useful advice for coaches and young athletes.

This is such a delicate topic and we need more articles such as this.

On one hand we hear crude cliches flying around the sport like ‘you have to be thin to win’. But if athletes take weight loss to the extreme it can lead to serious illness and problems.

It is of course not a new problem either and I remember articles in AW and elsewhere many years ago about leading junior athletes in the GB cross country team suffering from eating disorders.

There is often a fine line between being fast and light and being too light, weak and ill.

The more information we can get on this area, the better.
