AS we went to press, there was still some doubt as to the final result in the North of England road relay Championships.
The indecision is because there are question marks over athletes’ eligibility in leading teams and whether they have paid-up English membership.
While there are rules which have to be followed, surely this should have been sorted when the athletes entered – the closing date was over a week before the race.
If athletes were ineligible, then clubs should have known that before they were selected on the day.
It should not be the situation where, over 48 hours after the event, no one is sure who the medallists were!
Opponents of the registration scheme have been given ammunition of its inefficiency when it holds up medal distribution on major events.
It is not always clear cut and there have been plenty of instances where athletes have originally been declared ineligible and later found there has been some sort of administrative error and they were eligible to run after all. Before the event is when it should have been resolved.
