FORMER RUNNERS IN SPANISH CHARITY WALK
A GROUP of ex-athletes who trained together as students more than half a century ago are reuniting this month to tackle the lengthy Camino de
Santiago hiking trail in Spain for charity.
John Caine of Gateshead
Harriers, Richard Tibbott of
Herne Hill Harriers and Mike
Candlish of Jarrow AC started at Loughborough together in 1965 and on September 23 they are starting the 500-mile, month-long trek through Spain to raise funds for cancer research following the death of Tibbott’s wife, Catherine, to pancreatic cancer.
“It’s a sizeable task for four old runners re-living the daily discipline of putting in the miles day after day after day, carefully tending to leg muscles and tendons along the way,” says Caine, who will also be joined by fellow Gateshead Harrier and former training partner Brendan Foster for part of the route. “But why would you not help a friend achieve his target of raising charity money while walking 500 miles at the same time?”
