Birmingham 2018 volunteer deadline

Athletics Weekly - - nEWS -

POTENTIAL volunteers for the IAAF World Championships in Birmingham must sign up this week if they want to get involved in the event next March.

Last week the organisers said the 400-strong army of volunteers will be known as ‘gems’ and the decision was announced, somewhat appropriately, at the city’s historic Jewellery Quarter with 400m runner Emily Diamond there to help break the news.

Anyone over 18 can apply to be a ‘gem’ but the deadline is Friday September 29 at

Joan Durose, championships director for Birmingham

2018, says: “We are looking for people who have a sparkling personality to fulfil a selection of different roles, which include helping to look after the teams competing at the event, customer services roles where you would be providing assistance to spectators or working in the media centre, ensuring that the journalists and photographers from across the globe have all the information that they need.

“Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and it’s also a good opportunity to learn new skills or enhance your CV.”

The organisers of the championships are looking to use the event as a way of profiling the city and with this in mind, the event’s official mascot, Ruby the red panda, was unveiled a couple of months ago.

Her name was selected as another way of highlighting Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and a red panda was chosen as a way of acknowledging the important work that the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park does to protect and breed this endangered species.

Volunteer applicants will be contacted in October if they are going to be given an interview for a role. Then, all successful applicants will be allocated roles in January.
