LIVERPOOL Harriers trio of Emma Gordon, Jessica Cook and Ella McNiven beat fellow northerners Vale Royal to the title while the bronze medallists – Mansfield Harriers – received the biggest cheer of the day after making the podium on their home soil.

Gordon and Cook set things up perfectly for McNiven, who was in second place going into the final 2km stage. The 15-year-old chased down Holly Smith of Vale Royal and said: “I went off a bit slower this time and I felt good in the race. I’ve done this event twice before and we’ve won it before and again today!”

Like many of the nation’s leading athletes, McNiven now heads to the Milton Keynes Cross Challenge this weekend and also looks like she has the potential to make an impact at the Euro under-20 trials in Liverpool but said: “I’m maybe a little young for that.”
