HALLAMSHIRE HAS STRENGTH IN DEPTH
IN MANSFIELD, Hallamshire’s top trio of Ruby Simpson, Georgia Robertson and Emma Shipley took gold in their age group but the club’s youth section is growing so positively right now they fielded three teams and could have put five out if the rules had allowed it.
Simpson holds the UK under-15 800m record with 2:13.87 from 2017, while Shipley is No.2 on the UK under-13 rankings for the event this year, just two seconds behind Simpson.
Robertson, meanwhile, spends more time training as a swimmer than a runner but is also part of coach Steven Marshall’s group in the Sheffield area and she combined with the 800m duo to take the title 15 seconds ahead of Vale Royal, who were anchored by the fastfinishing Holly Weedall, while Cornwall AC’s long trip paid off with a hard-fought bronze.
“We’re very proud of them,” said Marshall, who added he hoped they would win more medals in years to come as they progress through the age groups.
Hallamshire is best known for being the breeding ground of a certain Sebastian Coe, but of the club’s current successes, Marshall explained: “The only rule we have is that we’re not training people for other sports, but we’re training athletes to be athletes.”
