WOODFORD ON FIRE
WOODFORD Green with Essex Ladies charged to a 10-second clear victory over Taunton and Chiltern Harriers.
Kai Boggon, Kieran Allgood and Sidnie Ward combined to triumph and team manager and coach John Stow described it as his greatest moment in 20 years of coaching and probably the best in 50 years as an athlete and coach, which is not bad if you think he once ran for GB.
“My aspiration as team manager was to try to get them in the top eight or ten,” he said. “But we weren’t sure what they were going to be like at this level.
“After the first leg I knew we were going to get a medal but I didn’t expect the gold.
“It’s my greatest day ever as a coach and probably as an athlete as well. This is a day I’ll never forget.”
Coaching colleague at Woodford Green, Richard Thurston, added: “We thought we might finish in the top 10 but to pull it off is amazing.”
The trio who ran train in a squad of 8-10 runners. “We had to make some tough decisions to pick the team,” said Stow, “but they delivered and I’m really proud of them.”
