AFD WIN AGAIN
THE 2017 event wasn’t quite as successful as 2016 for Aldershot, Farnham & District. Last year they won five of the 10 titles but this year “only” two – and one of the victories came in the under-17 men’s event.
Marcus Shantry got AFD off to a promising start in third place at the end of the first stage before handing to Luke Van Oudtshoorn, who put them into the lead with a strong second leg.
Then Max Heyden held pole position on the third of the 3km stages to give the Hampshire team gold with a buffer of 17 seconds from the runners up.
Behind, Tom Keen anchored Cambridge & Coleridge to silver medals ahead of Morpeth Harriers, Shaftesbury Barnet, Charnwood, Tonbridge and Reading. The Cambridge & Coleridge final stage man certainly ran a scorching leg, too, as he brought his team up from 11th to second.
Many of the runners in Mansfield will now head toward British Cross Challenge events in Milton Keynes and Liverpool but the AFD winners said they would prefer to target Hampshire League races and the bigger national events in February and March. “It was a three-hour journey just to get here,” they said.
