The strategically placed spikes in this five-spike plate have an asymmetrical layout designed to follow the foot’s natural plane of movement. This optimises the power and push off through the foot for a responsive feel. The brand’s boost cushioning is used both in the heel and forefoot to further enhance the shoe’s

responsiveness.

adizero Avanti

Four spikes are placed at the edges of this shoe’s lightweight, full-length spike plate that runs the length of the sole. It covers a low profile and lightweight, full-length midsole. As with the MD version boost material is incorporated into the spike’s design to provide superb cushioning. These are premium distance spikes built for

PBs.

BROOKS

QW-Kv3

Price: £95

Stockist: brooksrunning.com

The full-length spike plate and sleek design instantly create an impression of speed with this shoe. The plate houses seven spikes and helps position the foot for optimum power transfer to the track. The simple design with its seamless upper provides a neat fit around the foot locking it in place on the bends as well as the straights.

Wire v5

Stockist: brooksrunning.com

Ultra-light with a low profile full-length midsole, this spike combines speed with endurance for a middle-distance spike that’s ready to race. This is a versatile shoe which would suit distances from 400m to 3000m. The lightweight mesh upper wraps the foot so well you hardly notice it’s there.

ELMN8 v4

Price: £95

Stockist: brooksrunning.com

Distance runners will appreciate the lightweight, road-shoe feel of this spike which makes it easy to get along with and run quickly in. The six spikes are housed in a frame that surrounds the edge of the sole. This provides great traction and a lively feel without adding excess weight.

NEW BALANCE

Vazee Sigma

Price: £120

Stockist: newbalance.co.uk

These distinctive sprint spikes use a wrap-around design with a bootie ankle construction and BOA fastening system to create a fit that’s second to none. The BOA provides a close fit without pressure points that locks the foot in place and helps transfer power through the eight-spike plate. The plate is full-length and contoured to create a strong toe-off optimised for sprinting.

MD800v5

Price: £115

Stockist: newbalance.co.uk

With a slim, full-length EVA midsole combined with a semi-rigid spike plate, these middle-distance spikes offer a great combination of aggressive traction and distance running comfort. The seamless upper creates a close fit and reduces weight, focusing your effort on the track.

LD5000v5

Price: £115

Stockist: newbalance.co.uk

With the feel of an ultra-light road racing shoe these spikes use a breathable mesh upper with lightweight printed overlays to provide support. The result is a sock-like fit that’s barely noticeable on the foot. The four spikes are placed in a spider’s web design spike plate framework which covers the sole and creates an ultraresponsive feel which is at its best

when running quickly.

NIKE

Zoom Rival S9

Price: £65

Stockist: nike.com

The Rival name continues and this is its ninth incarnation.

The Rival again offers good value in an entry-level sprint spike. The seven-spike plate extends back into the arch of the foot to provide an aggressive feel usually found in more expensive models. The styling is typical of the brand – both stylish and

striking.

Zoom Rival M8

Price: £65

Stockist: nike.com

This is a true middle-distance spike in that it features a slightly extended spike-plate that combines with a low-profile layer of cushioning. There’s enough protection for a miler yet the shoe retains an out and out speed feel that will keep one, two and three-and-three-quarter lap athletes happy. It could also make for a good value option for multi-event

athletes.

Zoom Rival D9

Price: £65

Stockist: nike.com

With full-length phylon cushioning and a spike plate that provides enough traction without adding extra weight this shoe is able to go the distance in comfort. The single-layer mesh upper helps keep the weight to a minimum while the flywire system combines

into the laces to support the foot.
