JU­LIA RAT­CLIFFE of New Zealand grad­u­ated from sil­ver in 2014 to win gold with 69.94m as the favourite from Eng­land, So­phie Hitchon, fin­ished out­side the medals af­ter three fouls.

“It just wasn’t quite there to­day,” Hitchon, the Olympic bronze medal­list, said. “The warm-ups were re­ally good but it just didn’t hap­pen.

“I’ve been work­ing on a new tech­nique and I’ve got to keep work­ing on it be­cause it is def­i­nitely the way for­ward.When I land it, it will go very far.”

De­fend­ing cham­pion Sul­tana Frizell of Canada fin­ished just out­side the medals.
