A look for­ward to the Euro­pean U18 Champs and the up­com­ing Di­a­mond League meet­ings

BRI­TAIN topped the medals ta­ble at the in­au­gu­ral Euro­pean Un­der-18 Cham­pi­onships in Tbil­isi in 2016 and the coun­try will be look­ing for sim­i­lar suc­cess when the 2018 event takes place in the Hun­gar­ian city of Györ.

Two years ago, GB win­ners in­cluded Jona Efoloko, Ge­orge Mills, Jake Hey­ward, Is­abelle Bof­fey and Holly Mills as the GB team took five golds and 13 medals in to­tal to beat Ger­many, Italy and France in the medals ta­ble.

Now, the team is headed by high jump tal­ent Do­minic Og­bechie and 800m sen­sa­tions Max Bur­gin and Keely Hodgkin­son (left) at an event that takes place a few days be­fore the IAAF World Un­der-20 Cham­pi­onships kicks off in Fin­land.

Og­bechie high jumped a world age 15 record of 2.22m ear­lier this year in­doors and then this month took the Eng­land Ath­let­ics ti­tle in Bed­ford with 2.16m. Bur­gin ran a world age 15 800m record of 1:47.50 in May and has since been fo­cus­ing on GCSE ex­ams, while Hodgkin­son im­pressed at the Eng­land Ath­let­ics Cham­pi­onships with vic­tory over a field that in­cluded Bof­fey and Euro­pean un­der-20 cham­pion Khai Mh­langa.

Some ath­letes will be mak­ing a re­turn visit to Györ 12 months af­ter the Hun­gar­ian city staged the Euro­pean Youth Olympics.
