THE weekend had begun with the inaugural Simplyhealth Canine Run (see p62) before the Great South 5k, Junior and Mini Great South Run events.

The Isle of Wight’s Henry McLuckie won the 5km in 15:55 from Poole AC’s Jed Skilton in 16:12 and City of Portsmouth’s Jonny White with 16:20 as the top three all ran PBs.

“Coming into this it was just about getting a win under my belt,” said the 16-year-old champion. “I ran in Cardiff (Cross Challenge) last week and didn’t have the best of starts to the season so today was just to boost my confidence up to hopefully have a good cross-country season.

“I’ve got the European trials next month, so that’s a big aim for me, to try and get that GB vest.”

In the women’s race, Aldershot, Farnham & District’s Lauren Hall won in 17:24 from Sonja Vernikov with 17:59 and City of Portsmouth’s Rhiannon Dunlop with a PB of 18:06.

Hall’s win came on the day that a new memorial bench and plaque dedicated to her club-mates Stacey Burrows and Lucy Pygott, who died after being hit by a car while training in 2016, was being presented.

“Today is really a memorial day in terms of the club,” she said. “I really wanted to come out and do the club proud.”
