Price £21,405 On sale Now What’s new? Facelifted Octavia sampled with trusty 1.4 petrol engine and adaptive dampers The presence of a 1.4-litre petrol engine and adaptive dampers goes some way to livening up the straightlaced Octavia, which we tested recently as a less than inspiring 1.6 diesel. This turbocharged petrol is smooth, quiet and responsive, and with the dampers in Sport mode the Octavia feels sharper than a conventionally sprung version.

That said, on undulating B-roads, and despite having three suspension modes, the Skoda never truly settles. In Comfort it feels under-damped, while in Normal and Sport you have to deal with a fidgety low-speed ride.

We’d forego the adaptive dampers and put the money saved towards the 1.4 TSI’S fuel bill, which will be slightly higher than the diesel’s.
