CLEVER STUFF WE LOVE
Technology used to protect Formula 1 drivers has been applied to an even more worthy cause – helping save the lives of babies. Williams Advanced Engineering, part of the group that includes the Williams Martini Racing F1 team, has developed and made Babypod 20, a carbonfibre cot for newborn babies needing emergency transportation. Williams said it has improved the design of the standard Babypod and the new version can now withstand a crash measuring 20g. WAE boss Craig Wilson said that both an F1 car and the Babypod demand “a lightweight and strong structure that keeps the occupant safe in the event of an accident, and can monitor vital signs while remaining easily accessible.”
