VOLKSWAGEN EXPECTS TO sell about 60% of Arteons to fleet drivers, so fitting a frugal diesel engine such as the 148bhp 2.0 TDI seems sensible, especially given how good the unit is in other VW Group products.

Here the engine is quiet, refined and smooth, except that our test car, which was equipped with a sevenspeed automatic transmission, seemed sluggish from a standstill, which was frustrating.

Volkswagen will be adding a more meaty 187bhp version of its 2.0 TDI to the line-up this autumn. If its ability in the heavier Audi A6 is anything to go by, that variant will be the perfect all-rounder for fleet drivers.
