The new Mercedes-benz CLS has been designed so that it could be fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain – although Kelz says the firm has no plans to introduce one.

The petrol-engined versions of the 2018 CLS feature a 48V EQ Boost hybrid unit, with engines taken from the S-class range. While that model is getting a plug-in hybrid option, Kelz told Autocar the CLS would only get such systems if it was required by a change in legislation or demand.

“It would be technically possible to fit a plug-in hybrid but we have no plans to do so,” he said. “The demand for hybrids is not that high, so there’s no sense [in doing so]. But if it becomes necessary, we made sure the trunk was wide enough to house a plugin hybrid motor.”
