Call for extra self-driving car test
MOTORISTS should take a second driving exam to ensure that they are capable of taking back control from autonomous cars, a new report has suggested.
According to research conducted by the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee, a third of drivers failed to “recover the situation” during simulations with semi-autonomous cars.
The research also showed drivers of automated vehicles took on average six times longer to respond to emergency braking situations compared with those in non-autonomous cars. The report concluded that drivers risk becoming “complacent”.
Scientists suggested driver training, even for those with existing licences, should be introduced to ensure drivers know how autonomous cars behave and when they need to take back control.
