Discover Nav Pro £1,325 option Key features: Carplay, digital dash

THE GTE Advance comes with Volkswagen’s Discover Nav system as standard and features a bright and clear eight-inch touchscreen, sat-nav, DAB and Bluetooth – although Apple Carplay and Android Auto will be more important to many buyers of the hatchback.

Spend £1,325 and you can upgrade to the Discover Navigation Pro unit fitted to our test car. This gets a larger, glossy 9. 2-inch touchscreen, but it loses the extra touch-sensitive hot keys down the sides, which actually makes it more fiddly to operate. Gesture control is also included with the Pro upgrade, but its functionality is limited and it doesn’t always work.

VW’S 12.3-inch Active Info Display is standard, replacing the regular Golf ’s analogue dials. This can be configured to show a variety of information, including sat-nav. The GTE’S e-remote app allows you monitor charging wirelessly from your mobile phone, while plenty of connected services are also included.

CONNECT Clear display can show energy use, while Appconnect pairs easily with smartphones

SCREEN Upgrade to a 9.2-inch screen, and you get gesture control, but it’s not the smoothest system to use
