MAZDA’S new compression-ignition Skyactiv-x petrol engines will offer a “realistic” maximum output of 190bhp, according to powertrain boss Mitsuo Hitomi.

The 2.0-litre unit will make its debut in the next Mazda 3, previewed by the KAI concept (above).

Hitomi-san said Mazda “won’t be using turbos” with this tech, and cited hybrid electrification as the best way to further boost performance and efficiency.
