Volkswagen golf r
FOR: Fast, grippy and cheap to buy AGAINST: Lacks premium image, dark cabin
DON’T be put off by this Golf’s relatively humble origins, as it is a different beast. Its four-cylinder engine produces 296bhp, which combines with fourwheel drive to make it almost as fast as the Audi.
The VW is remarkably quick point-to-point, and its comfort and solidity make it a great daily driver. It’s also considerably cheaper to buy, if you can accept a less premium badge. We saw a 2016 R Estate DSG with just 9,000 miles for £23,995. YOU won’t feel short-changed plumping for the Golf – it might be a bit dark inside, but the materials are on par with those in the BMW. It’s roomy in the back, and its massive 605-litre boot steals the show here. THE Mk7 Golf finished in a strong 18th in our Driver Power 2017 survey. We’ve heard of no major issues with the R, but DSG gearboxes have been known to be problematic in the past. Faults were recorded by 15.6 per cent of drivers.
