QUESTION

I’m looking at importing a BMW 5 Series from Japan. Are there any pitfalls? Phil Taylor

ANSWER

Apart from the shipping charge, there are port fees, import duty and VAT to consider. A car that is under ten years old will also need an IVA/MOT test. Then there are UK registration fees. It is much less bother to buy directly from a specialist import company.

QUESTION

I’m 20 and have just passed my driving test. I have a decent budget for a car, so what should I look for? Celine Lawrence

ANSWER

The answer to this is always going to relate to insurance. You may have a big budget, but all new drivers are expected to pay generously for their initial premiums. My choice would be a Fiat Panda Dynamic Eco. It is cheap to insure and a 2010 example costs about £2000.

QUESTION

I’m a big bloke and I need my next car to offer comfort, practicality and the ability to carry my pushbike. Suggestions? Jesper Groenvold

ANSWER

A Nissan Qashqai could be the answer. Even with four people on board, there is plenty of head and leg room. For the bike, there is a 430-litre boot that expands to 1585 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.
