WHAT ABOUT RETRO-FITTING?
Tfl’s website suggests that retro-fitting smog gear will be acceptable. However, we struggled to unearth a single device approved for a car. Most technology is aimed at buses and trucks.
One device is the £400 CGON ezero, which injects low doses of oxygen and hydrogen into the inlet manifold, but it is not yet approved.
CGON CEO Simon Johnson said ezero fitted to a Nissan Qashqai diesel has cut particulate matter by 90%, NOX by 48% and CO2 by 12%. “We’ve shown ezero works, but approval is waiting on rules that haven’t yet been published,” he said.
The government has promised to publish regulations by March this year, leaving little time to gain approval.
