STEPHEN’S GOT A COMBAT BOT

Autocar - - INSIGHT -

Over the years, when Stephen has not been too busy tinkering with disruptive vehicle technology, he and some friends decided to build a robot to compete in Robot Wars before the television show was axed by the BBC earlier this year. He still plans to work on the robot, though, and talked us through some of the engineering inspiration he’d found while observing vehicle development. “Quite a lot of the equipment to help with [vehicle production] is built with a space frame; a box section, welded up quickly. The reason we decided to do that with our robot was simplicity and it’s the reason why car makers employ it too. So it’s quite interesting to see that kind of thing done. But the combat robot is a very different thing to a car factory.”
