I was pleased to see the ref­er­ence to the Peu­geot 405 in your ar­ti­cle on 1990s cars (12 Septem­ber). I owned a GRI model in which I did 155,000 miles. I still reckon it was the best car I have ever had. At the time, it was said that Peu­geot made their own shock ab­sorbers/spring dampers. Do you know if they still do this?

Don Maclean Worces­ter I had a 405 too, Don. Great car. I don’t be­lieve PSA makes its own dampers any more. It be­came very ex­pen­sive and the spe­cial­ist sup­pli­ers lifted their qual­ity stan­dards at the same time. Ac­cu­rate cal­i­bra­tion be­came pos­si­ble by more con­ven­tional means – SC
