SMITH UN­SCATHED AF­TER HUGE F5000 PUKEKOHE CRASH

A mon­ster crash for Ken Smith, and Michael Collins’ bril­liant de­but in Alis­tair Hey’s ex-evan Noyes Mcrae GM1, char­ac­terised last week­end’s New Zealand F5000 Cham­pi­onship opener at Pukekohe. Hav­ing switched Lola T332s to Ian Ri­ley’s – qual­i­fied on pole by pro­tege Tom Alexan­der – af­ter his en­gine ran a bear­ing, Smith lost a wing, which skewed him into Codie Banks’ Talon, then the wall. Nei­ther driver was hurt.

Clark Proctor (March 73A) won both races by inches from Collins.
